About Wise Fool

Wise Fool Puppet Intervention was a giant puppet theatre dedicated to environmental, political and social change. Founded by K.Ruby Blume, Amy Christian and David Keyek, the group was active in the San Francisco Bay Area from 1990-2007.  In 1999 some members of the group relocated and formed Wise Fool New Mexico, which is still active in Santa Fe today.

Wise Fool Puppet Intervention created giant puppets, stilt characters and other magical imagery and brought them into the streets where they were accessible to all.  They created a dozen or so full length street theatre pieces and regularly participated in community events such as Day of the Dead and Carnival.  Wise Fool visually supported hundred of actions on diverse issues including protesting war, nuclear weapons and clearcutting old growth. They taught puppet building workshops to thousands of adults and children.

Wise Fool worked to promote puppetry, street theatre and spectacle as serious art forms that could be enjoyed by adults and children alike. To this end they produced In the Street Theatre Festival in the Tenderloin neighborhood, which was free to the public and PuppetLOVE! Festival of Radical Puppetry, a multi-day celebration featuring shows, workshops and a gallery exhibit.
